American flight controllers are increasingly looking for additional employment and reporting ill, as they remain on duty unpaid amid the federal closure, the transport chief has announced.

"These professionals are wearing thin," Sean Duffy informed Fox News on Sunday, as certain aircraft were grounded on the California shoreline due to staffing shortages.

Following the government shut down on 1 October, flight controllers, who are considered critical staff, were told to keep doing their jobs without pay.

But a number have been missing, causing terminals to halt or reduce their flight operations, which has added to setbacks caused by weather and additional factors.

More than 3,000 US flights were postponed on Sunday, and the secretary stated he expects the situation to grow worse.

"I am seeing the stress," he said in an interview on a weekend program, noting that he had met with multiple professionals to listen to their concerns directly.

"They are pursuing side jobs, they're out there looking, 'Should I drive Uber, can I secure another source of income to make ends meet?'" he added.

The secretary further mentioned that on the previous day twenty-two notifications at airfields indicated travel would be held up due to a shortage of employees - among the peak after the closure started.

The US government shutdown reached its 26th day on Sunday, rendering it the second-longest halt in history.

Duffy has repeatedly warned that aviation regulators would reduce the quantity of planes in the sky if there is a shortage of safety personnel.

In his conversation, he declined to respond directly when asked if it was secure to travel by air in the US, and instead issued a direct appeal to the professionals.

"I need my staff focused on the flight paths, not on the monetary matters at home," Duffy stated.

On Sunday, certain flights were grounded at LAX due to staffing shortages, causing interruption at the fifth-busiest airport in the nation and one of the busiest in the globe, as well as additional travel extending north to the city of Oakland.

The Federal Aviation Administration alert was issued at 08:45 in the morning on the weekend. Numerous trips were operating normally by midday.

Travel at Newark Airport, though, were postponed an average of 82 minutes due to personnel issues, and the FAA indicated Dallas Fort-Worth, the second-busiest airfield in the country, could experience problems from reduced staff in the afternoon.

The FAA advised passengers in the state to check with airlines about updated departure times.

The situation comes ahead of the third match of the championship, which is due to be played in LA on Monday night, and approximately four weeks prior to the Thanksgiving break, one of the busiest periods to fly in the United States.

Pressure on US air travel helped end a government shutdown in 2019. At the time, the halt had entered its fifth week and affected airline operations, including aviator instruction.

It prompted a number of flight controllers to remain absent on the same day on 25 January 2019, briefly halting movement at LaGuardia Airport in New York.

That same day, the former president, who at the time was in his first term as leader, consented to approve a short-term spending bill, bringing an end to the government shutdown after thirty-five days.
