Igor Jesus Scores Twice as Nottingham Forest Round Off Europa League Campaign with Victory over Ferencvaros

Forest striker in action
The Brazilian forward has now scored 11 goals in every tournament for Nottingham Forest this season.

Match Summary

  • Forest were already through to the knockout round.
  • Bence Otvos deflection gives hosts a opening period lead.
  • The striker's European strike puts the team in command.
  • Forward adds a third with a clinical effort in the second half.
  • James McAtee rounds off a great performance with a spot-kick.

The Brazilian attacker found the net on two occasions as Nottingham Forest concluded the league phase of the European competition with a convincing triumph against Ferencvaros at the home stadium.

The hosts had already secured a berth in the next qualifying round and went into this fixture with a small chance of making the league's elite, although they required several results to go their way.

Those results failed to materialize but this assured performance will give the supporters belief that their team can come through the two-legged play-off to advance to the round of sixteen.

Kristoffer Zachariassen struck the upright with a header inside the opening stages for the visitors – coached by ex-Premier League forward Robbie Keane – but it was all Forest from that point forward.

They opened the scoring in the early stages when Ryan Yates' cross was deflected in by the defender and doubled the lead shortly after – Jesus firing an effort in at the back post for his 10th goal of the season.

The forward's eleventh goal arrived soon after the restart when he timed a run perfectly to escape the backline and then place a shot beyond the shot-stopper.

That goal killed off the visitors' hopes of mounting a recovery and instead Forest added a fourth when the excellent James McAtee scored from a spot-kick after a foul by the hapless Otvos inside the penalty area on the winger.

Europe's secondary club competition knockout phase play-off lottery is scheduled on the final Friday of January (12:00 GMT), where Forest could be drawn against either the Turkish side or the Greek club.

"It is not just the scoreline, there was that feel about it. I want these players to do collectively well, the entire team," said manager Sean Dyche.

"This is another step, but it is a positive one."

Forest Analysis: Striker Shines as Recent Arrival Observes from Stands

Igor Jesus has been a standout performer for Forest in European competition this season with half of his eleven strikes scored in the Europa League.

This double also means he has got three goals in his last two games and the prospect of competition for his place in attack could be spurring him on.

Italian forward Lorenzo Lucca was last week signed on loan and he was observing this game from the directors' box.

That may well have been on the striker's thoughts as he was outstanding against the opposition, producing two superb finishes and generally being a constant threat to the opposition backline with his speed and movement.

The forward was not the only one in catching the eye, with James McAtee turning in his best performance in a Nottingham Forest shirt since joining from Manchester City in the previous transfer window, while Dan Ndoye also impressed.

Such positive showings will give the club some fresh hope as they turn their attention to increasing the gap from the bottom three when they welcome their London rivals on Sunday.

"All you can ask for is a response," continued the manager.

"I have always trusted their commitment or their loyalty or integrity. It is just go and show your ability.

"James was excellent and Dan was super sharp. Igor got another couple and these are good signs."
